Is the St. Regis a Flop? For a brand with such a storied legacy, expectations for the St. Regis San Francisco are naturally high. But does it live up to the hype? Here’s how my stay went.
1. Booking and Check-In Experience
The day of arrival started off underwhelming. I parked the car in front of the valet, but there wasn’t anyone around, so I had to wait for the valet to return in order to unload my personal items. There was no bellman in sight. The front desk was professional but not friendly, and despite having Titanium status, we were not offered an upgrade.
2. Room Quality
The room was very clean and quite spacious for a city hotel. I thought the layout was well thought-out. You can really tell the difference in hardware when staying at a 5-star property. The king bed was very comfortable, and I liked that the door provided a good separation of spaces. The bathtub was spotless, and the minibar was stocked with premium options—not your typical cheap snacks. It was also nice and quiet on our floor. Really nothing to complain about, besides the furniture and overall style, which in my humble opinion, felt a bit outdated.
3. Amenities and Facilities
The lobby was small, and the gym was definitely too small—especially considering that St. Regis Residences also use the same gym. Overall, the amenities felt a bit lacking compared to other St. Regis properties around the world.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at the bar for breakfast was great. Even though the complimentary breakfast options were limited, we still had a good time! I loved the decor and the busy morning vibe. The food was decent too—I always appreciate when hotel breakfasts exceed expectations.

5. Staff and Service
At least during my stay, SF St Regis seemed understaffed. The service was professional, but I missed out on the Butler service entirely. It all felt very underwhelming. I had high expectations, but there was nothing memorable about the service. Then again, perhaps I set the bar too high—especially considering I paid under $600 for the night, which is much cheaper than other St. Regis locations worldwide. I probably should have managed my expectations better.
6. Location and Accessibility
The location is suitable for both business and leisure travelers. It’s located in the SoMa district, within walking distance to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Yerba Buena Gardens, and the Moscone Center—great for those attending conferences. Union Square and Market Street shopping are also nearby, as are several notable restaurants and cafes. Public transportation is easily accessible with BART and Muni lines close by, making it convenient for exploring the city.
7. Value for Money
Definitely not worth the money if you’re expecting high-end service or exceptional hospitality. It depends on how you weigh your priorities. If you’re able to book it for under $600, maybe it’s worth trying just to experience it for yourself—but only if you go in with managed expectations.
