Is Alila Villas Uluwatu the most luxurious escape in Bali, or just another overhyped resort? With its jaw-dropping ocean views, award-winning design, and reputation as a serene getaway, it’s no wonder travelers rave about this destination.

1. Booking and Check-In Experience

The check-in process was incredibly relaxing and seamless. From the moment you arrive, you are warmly greeted by the staff who assist with your luggage and guide you to a seating area where you can enjoy a light snack. The atmosphere feels magical, setting the tone for the rest of your stay. The staff’s attentiveness adds to the sense of relaxation. Afterward, they escort you to your room via golf cart, ensuring you feel pampered right from the start.

2. Room Quality

The rooms at Alila Villas Uluwatu are nothing short of spectacular. They are expansive, with a well-thought-out layout that includes a private pool, cabana, outdoor shower, indoor shower with a tub, and double sinks with amenities labeled “his” and “hers”—a charming touch. The inclusion of Netflix on the TV was surprising to med, especially considering many U.S. and European hotels lack streaming options.

The beautiful weather during my stay enhanced the room’s appeal, making it feel even more serene and relaxing. I had one of the best sleeps of my life here. The room was clean and up to standard; however, the tropical environment does mean bugs are present. While the hotel takes measures to minimize them, they can still be noticeable. It’s also worth mentioning that some guests have reported inconsistencies in room cleanliness, so it’s worth double-checking upon arrival.

3. Amenities and Facilities

Beyond the private pool in your villa, the resort offers a stunning infinity pool with breathtaking views of the ocean from Bali’s southernmost tip. The gym, though I didn’t personally try it, appeared well-equipped and modern. One of the unique offerings is the “Under the Stars” spa service. This exclusive experience involves a private balcony where you can enjoy a massage under the night sky, listening to the soothing sound of waves crashing against the cliffs. While I didn’t have time to experience this, it’s a feature that elevates the resort’s luxury appeal. They also have a private beach right down a steep hike, which you have to take extreme precaution to check it out and avoid it during high tides.

4. Dining Experience

I had try “The Warung,” the resort’s restaurant on site, which served surprisingly flavorful dishes. While the seasoning was lighter compared to traditional Indonesian food, it offered peace of mind with no risk of the infamous “Bali belly.” The complimentary breakfast was even more impressive, offering a variety of dishes that outshone the options at Andaz Bali. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try their dinner offerings, but based on my experience, I would recommend sampling as much as possible during the stay.

5. Staff and Service

The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. However, due to the expansive layout of the resort, service requests could take some time to be fulfilled. It always feel safe and calming. The breakfast staff stood out for their exceptional attentiveness and hospitality, making every morning a delightful experience.

6. Location and Accessibility

The resort’s location on the southernmost tip of Bali offers unparalleled privacy and seclusion, making it perfect for those seeking a retreat from the world. However, it is quite far from major attractions, shopping districts, and nightlife, which may suit the first-time visitors who want to explore the island. That said, the remote location contributes to the resort’s “secret oasis” vibe, with great food and exceptional service enhancing the overall experience.

7. Value for Money

With room rates typically ranging from $850 to $1,000 per night, the resort is undoubtedly a splurge. I redeemed my stay for 30,000 Hyatt points per night, though the redemption rate has since increased to 45,000 points. While the experience was incredible, I’d hesitate to call it the best value for money in Bali. This is more of a destination for those who have already explored the island and are looking for a luxurious, relaxing retreat.

Conclusion and Recommendation

My experience at Alila Villas Uluwatu was exceptional, and I would highly recommend it—but with some caveats. If it’s your first trip to Bali, this might not be the best choice, as you’ll likely want to explore the island rather than retreat into a luxurious bubble. However, if you’re looking for a high-end experience and have a bit of room in your budget, this resort is hard to beat. Be sure to avoid the rainy season to fully enjoy what the property has to offer.
